Rui Sanches (Lisbon, 1954) is a Portuguese visual artist known for his sculptural installations and his use of unconventional materials such as wood, plastic, glass, and metal. He began his career in the 1980s and was one of the pioneers of conceptual art in Portugal. His work is characterized by its exploration of themes related to identity, memory, and time, as well as his interest in the relationship between art and architecture. Throughout his career, he has held numerous solo and group exhibitions in Portugal and abroad, and his work can be found in public and private collections worldwide. In 1999, he represented Portugal at the Venice Biennale and in 2003 received the Portuguese National Prize for Visual Arts. In addition to his work as an artist, he has also taught at several art schools and curated several exhibitions.
