Thought and reflection, meditation and discovery. The painting of Sergio Barrera (Valencia, 1967) is unleashed from the anonymous gesture of the brushstroke, unraveling its own contradictions and historical conventions. Barrera calls it an antigesture and confesses to developing a type of pictorial record that synthesizes the essential constants of a brushstroke. All the spontaneity associated with the gesture is subverted in an indirect, cold, and calculating process of fine brushwork. Sergio Barrera's work has been featured in exhibitions at the Centro del Carme Cultura Contemporània, Fundación Bancaja (Valencia), Centro Cultural Las Cigarreras, MACA Museo de Arte Contemporáneo (Alicante), and Centro de Creación Contemporánea Matadero (Madrid). In 2017, he was part of the IVAM Produce project of the IVAM Valencian Institute of Modern Art.
