Susana Solano (Spain, 1946) is a Spanish sculptor. An artist of great international renown, she is considered the heir to the Spanish sculptural tradition pioneered by Julio González, Jorge Oteiza, and Eduardo Chillida. Susana Solano's works are part of an abstract tradition, understood as a chosen direction, a proposal nuanced over the years by oscillations of distance and proximity to the references in her works. Some works border on direct allusions to reality, while others are enclosed in an appearance of extreme opacity. In 1974, she began her studies at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Barcelona. The warm reception of her works led to her participation in major events such as the Documenta 8th and 9th in Kassel (1987 and 1992) and the São Paulo (1987) and Venice (1988 and 1993) biennials. She has been featured in the finest museums, art centres and galleries around the world (Whitechapel Art Gallery in London, Skulptur Projekte in Münster and the McKee Gallery in New York, or the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, to name a few) and has been awarded the Special Prize at the Henry Grand Prix Exhibition in Tokyo (1985), the National Prize for Plastic Arts from the Ministry of Culture (1988), the CEOE Prize for the Arts in Madrid (1996) and the Tomás Francisco Prieto Prize from the Royal Mint, Madrid 2011. She has also collaborated on several occasions with architects on exterior projects: José Acebillo, Ignacio Linazasoro, Hans Hollein, Francisco Torres, Victor Rahola, Javier Romero, Ferran Vizoso and Guillermo Vázquez Consuegra.
