Théo Mercier is a French contemporary artist dedicated to sculpture and stage direction. He was born in 1984 in Fontenay-aux-Roses, near Paris, and graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 2008. Since his beginnings, Mercier has worked on the relationship between the work and its environment. His installations are characterized by combining his own sculptures with objects or artifacts he collects on his travels, seeking to create authentic visual choreographies for the viewer. Furthermore, in his artistic practice, he strives to deconstruct the mechanisms of history, objects, and representations in which he finds harmonious contradictions. Mercier considers himself an explorer, collector, and artist. In his works, he reflects on the intersection of anthropology, geopolitics, and tourism, and proclaims a formal freedom in his practice. He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Centre Pompidou-Metz, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit, and the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art in Moscow, among others. His work also extends to stage direction, collaborating with leading theater and dance companies in France and abroad. In 2015, he founded the contemporary theater company La Morsure with actress and dancer Melanie Jame Wolf. Théo Mercier is an artist with a multidisciplinary and constantly evolving practice, whose work is characterized by a blend of the sublime and the grotesque, the beautiful and the sinister, the ancient and the modern.
