MATERIALS AND CARE

 Recommendations for proper conservation of works of art:

  • Keep artwork away from direct sunlight and any other heat sources (heating, air conditioning, etc.). Avoid hanging artwork near areas with smoke and pollution (such as fireplaces or kitchens). We recommend protecting your artwork with a glass frame.

Avoid sudden temperature changes. It is recommended to store paintings in areas with a room temperature of 18-20°C and 50% relative humidity.

If you want to permanently illuminate the work, we recommend using cold light sources. Use a soft duster for periodic cleaning. Never use household cleaners.

Information about the work

Doña Jerónima de la Fuente (Velázquez), created by Antonio Saura (Huesca, 1930 - Cuenca, 1998) in 1991, is a limited-edition color silkscreen print that is part of a series dedicated to paying homage to the great masters of art history. Inspired by the painting by Diego Velázquez, the greatest exponent of the Spanish Baroque, entitled The Venerable Mother Jerónima de la Fuente (currently in the collection of the Museo del Prado), this work reinterprets the tradition of portraiture through a powerful, almost abstract language. The reduced use of color and energetic strokes give the image a haunting presence, reflecting Saura's interest in exploring identity and inner torment. At the same time, the print exemplifies the artist's distinctive style, as this time he reimagines a classic from a modern and expressive perspective.

Antonio Saura (Huesca, Spain, 1930 – Cuenca, Spain, 1998) began his artistic career in Madrid in 1947. Influenced by artists such as Arp and Tanguy, he developed a personal style characterized by surreal and dreamlike paintings and drawings, mainly of imaginary landscapes with a rich color palette. Throughout his life, Saura visited Paris on several occasions, establishing his residence there in 1967. During this time, he became involved in the opposition to the Franco dictatorship and participated in debates on politics, aesthetics, and artistic creation. In 1971, he temporarily abandoned painting on canvas to devote himself to writing, drawing, and painting on paper, returning to painting on canvas in 1979. From 1977 onwards, he began publishing his writings and working on stage designs for the theater, ballet, and opera. In 1983, he created a series of outstanding portraits entitled "Dora Maar" or "Dora Maar visited". Until his death in 1998, Saura continued developing his work, consolidating his legacy as one of the great contemporary Spanish artists.
