Information about the work

El Perro de Goya I, created by Antonio Saura in 1972, is a limited edition color serigraph that belongs to a series dedicated to paying homage to masters of art history. Inspired by one of Francisco Goya's famous and enigmatic "Black Paintings," Saura reinterprets the image through his unmistakable abstract language. The work is characterized by a dark, dense background from which a twisted central figure emerges, suggesting the silhouette of the dog. Through the use of abstraction and intense gesturalism, Saura manages to capture the emotional charge of Goya's original piece, while also imbuing it with his personal and visceral expressive force. This print reflects the artist's ability to update and reinterpret classic works, endowing them with a profound emotional and contemporary dimension.

The work is included in the Catalogue Raisonné (Patrick Cramer, Geneva, 2000)

Antonio Saura (Spain, 1930–1998). Born in Huesca, he began his artistic career in Madrid in 1947. Influenced by Arp and Tanguy, he worked in painting and drawing, as well as writing and creating set designs for theater, ballet, and opera.

His early works were characterized by a surrealist and dreamlike style, featuring imaginary landscapes and a broad color palette. In 1971, he temporarily abandoned painting on canvas to focus on drawing and painting on paper, returning to canvas in 1979. In 1983, he created the portrait series "Dora Maar" or "Dora Maar Visited". His work was also linked to his reflections on politics, aesthetics, and artistic creation.

After visiting Paris on several occasions, he settled there in 1967 and joined the opposition to Franco’s dictatorship. His work is part of the collections of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Guggenheim Bilbao Museoa, the Centre Pompidou, the Tate Modern, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
