Anish Kapoor

Anish Kapoor (India, 1954) studied at Hornsey College of Art and later at Chelsea School of Art. His practice encompasses sculpture, large-scale installations, and graphic work, and he maintains a constant connection to India’s cultural tradition.

His sculptures feature curved forms that are seemingly simple and almost always monochromatic, with intense colors and frequent use of powdered pigments. His work fuses Eastern and Western influences and explores opposing relationships such as open and closed, light and dark, and opacity and transparency. In his graphic work, he extracts light from a mass of color using a technique akin to the “manera negra,” maintaining a conceptual connection to his sculpture and his link to abstraction.

He represented the United Kingdom at the 1990 Venice Biennale and received the Turner Prize in 1991. Among his monumental works are "Taratantara" (1999) and "Marsyas" (2002), installed in the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern. He has exhibited at the Grand Palais in Paris, the Guggenheim Bilbao, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, and the Museo Universitario de Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City. His work is included in the collections of the Reina Sofía Museum, the Guggenheim Bilbao, the Banco Santander Foundation, the Hortensia Herrero Collection, the Tate, the Fondazione Prada, and the De Pont Foundation for Contemporary Art.
